Choosing the Right Gravel or Road e-bike for Canadian Riding
At Amego EV, we carry a curated selection of gravel and road e-bikes from premium brands. Our lineup focuses on quality mid-drive systems - primarily Bosch - that deliver natural, responsive power through the full pedal stroke. These are serious bikes built for riders who want performance without compromise: light enough to feel like a real road bike, capable enough to handle mixed terrain on longer adventures.
Drop bar e-bikes are ideal for road cyclists looking to extend their range and tackle longer routes, commuters who want speed and efficiency, and adventure riders who split time between pavement and gravel trails. Most models in this collection weigh under 16 kg and are legal on all Ontario and Alberta roads and bike paths as Class 1 or Class 2 e-bikes, with motor assistance up to 32 km/h.
Not sure which gravel e-bike is right for you? Our experts at our Toronto and Calgary showrooms can help you find the right fit, geometry, and motor spec for your riding style. Book a test ride or visit us in-store.
Frequently Asked Questions — Electric Mountain Bikes At Amego
What is a gravel e-bike?
A gravel e-bike is a drop-bar electric bicycle designed to perform on both paved roads and unpaved gravel or dirt surfaces. They combine the aerodynamic riding position of a road bike with wider tires, more relaxed geometry, and disc brakes for confident handling on mixed terrain. The added pedal-assist motor lets you ride longer distances with less fatigue.
What is the difference between a gravel e-bike and a road e-bike?
Road e-bikes are optimized for smooth pavement - lighter, narrower tires, and a more aggressive racing geometry. Gravel e-bikes have wider tire clearance (typically 38-50mm), a slightly more upright riding position, and more robust components suited to off-road riding. Many riders find gravel e-bikes more versatile for Canadian conditions, where roads range from chip-seal to packed gravel.
Are drop bar e-bikes legal in Ontario and Alberta?
Yes. Drop-bar e-bikes sold at Amego EV qualify as power-assisted bicycles (PABs) under Ontario and Alberta regulations - motor assistance limited to 500W and 32 km/h, no throttle required. They are legal on roads, bike lanes, and multi-use paths where regular bicycles are permitted. Riders must be 16 or older and are not required to have a driver's license or insurance.
What motor system do your gravel e-bikes use?
The gravel and road e-bikes in our lineup run three of the most respected motor systems available: Bosch mid-drive (Performance Line and Performance Line CX), Fazua Ride 60, and MAHLE X35+. Each suits a different riding style - Bosch delivers maximum torque and power for climbing and heavy use, Fazua offers a lightweight mid-drive option with a natural pedal feel, and MAHLE X35+ integrates invisibly into the rear hub for the lightest, most road-bike-like experience available in an e-bike. Our technicians are trained to service all three systems at our Toronto and Calgary locations.
Can I test ride a gravel e-bike before buying?
Yes. Test rides are available at our Downtown Toronto (533 Richmond St W), Midtown Toronto (87 Wingold Ave Unit 4), and Calgary (506 42 Ave SE) showrooms. We recommend booking in advance to ensure your preferred model is available and set up for your height.
